Cyber attack stats reinforce need for firewall

Worrying new figures about cyber attacks have highlighted the need for robust security measures among businesses of all sizes. According to an official report, the number of UK businesses suffering a cyber attack doubled last year, as almost half of firms detected some kind of security breach in 2016.

Let’s break that down. The figures, published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, revealed that as many as 46 per cent of companies suffered a cyber attack or breach of their computer systems last year, compared with just 24 per cent the year before. That’s a 22 per cent increase in 12 months.

The government recently warned that a “sizeable proportion” of businesses do not have the necessary protections in place that could result in the loss of customer data. But not only that. It’s clear that thousands of businesses across the country are failing to keep their own data in check - and it’s time something was done.

Fraudulent emails were found to be the most common type of attack, affecting 72 per cent of companies that experienced a problem. Other common incidents involved viruses and malicious software being downloaded on to companies’ computer systems, as well as employees’ identities being stolen and used in emails or online.

A worrying statistic

The survey of 1,523 businesses revealed that the average cost of a cyber attack stood at £1,570 for all companies, rising to a whopping £19,600 for larger ones. Unsurprisingly, larger companies are targeted more often, with 68 per cent of those with more than 250 employees and 66 per cent of those with between 50 and 249 reporting attacks.

So, does that mean smaller firms are off the hook? Certainly not.

We’ve long since spoken of the dangers of a lack of awareness regarding IT security, and we’ve noticed that smaller firms often have a degree of complacency when it comes to IT security. A word of warning: small businesses are incredibly vulnerable to cyber attacks, and leaving yourself unprotected could have disastrous results in the long term.

This is just one of the reasons why having a firewall in place is vital for safeguarding your business against outsider threat. Read on to find out more about a key provider of firewalls.
